Fairmount Secondary School pupils were lauded at the school’s valedictory ceremony on Wednesday last week.

Pupils were given certificates and trophies for excelling in various school subjects ahead of the matric exams that started this week.

Justine Williams received the award as the top academic achiever.

Provincial minister of education Debbie Schäfer has encouraged matriculants to do their best during this time.

“We encourage all our candidates for this year’s examinations to stay focused and to put in the hard work required to prepare for the upcoming examinations. I have every confidence in our matrics, who have worked hard throughout the schoolyear.

“I wish them all the best of luck for this final leg of their school career and am sure that they will do both themselves and this province proud,” Schäfer says in a statement.

This year a record number of 55 919 full-time candidates will be writing the matric exams. There are a further 12 251 part-time candidates registered.

The examinations will be written at 442 locations across the province and will end with the final exam paper on 27 November
