Fraudsters strike at Vangate Mall

2015-07-07 06:00

An Athlone resident has fallen victim to fraud after she was cornered by three men at Vangate Mall on Thursday morning last week.

The incident took place at 06:49 as the woman attempted to withdraw cash from an FNB ATM.

She was approached by three men, who then forced her to key in her cellphone number as well as her PIN, before leaving the ATM without receiving any money.

The woman then went to look for help, realising that money had inexplicably disappeared from her account after receiving SMSes on her cellphone notifying her of cash withdrawals.

The police advise the community to be careful when drawing money at ATMs, reiterating that women should always have someone accompanying them when going to an ATM. Furthermore, the police suggest that it is safer to withdraw money from supermarket tillpoints where there is an option to do so.

According to the Banking Association of South Africa’s website, you can limit your chances of becoming a victim of ATM fraud by taking the following steps:

. Your PIN should never be revealed to anyone, not even to the bank or police.

. Use ATMs at the places where you feel the most comfortable.

. Be on the look-out for anyone or anything suspicious at the ATM. If you find anything suspicious, avoid using the ATM.

. When nearing the ATM, have your card ready in your hand.

. Use one hand to shield the keypad of the ATM while keying in your PIN.

. Avoid using ATMs which appear to be damaged or tampered with.

. When experiencing difficulty with a transaction, do not ask for or accept help from a stranger.

. If it is possible, cancel the transaction you are busy with on the ATM and withdraw your bank card from the ATM if it is not working properly.

. Make sure that once you have completed your transaction, you have carefully stored your cash and card in a safe place (your wallet, pocket or handbag) before leaving the ATM area.

. If your card fails to eject or if you experience any hindrance from someone at an ATM, you are urged to use the help line provided at the ATM and advised to contact your bank and the police
