A Hanover Park man who allegedly beat his two-year-old daughter to death has been arrested after days spent in hiding.

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Desmond Laing, the girl was assaulted Halmans Walk on Thursday 18 June. “The incident occurred between 12:00 and 21:00. On Friday 19 June at 13:00 the child was taken to Hanover Park day hospital where she was declared dead on arrival,” Laing confirms.

“It is alleged that the father assaulted the mother and the two-year-old baby who was identified as Zoë. They were attacked with the fist for about six hours after the child refused to eat bread. The child sustained head and facial wounds and injuries to the body,” Laing said.

According to him the suspect, who disappeared in an effort to evade arrest, went into hiding between the Athlone, Bonteheuwel and Mitchell’s Plain areas. “He has since been arrested in Athlone in an informal settlement. Police members received tip-offs from the community and detectives went into the area about five times last week. He was finally arrested on Thursday evening just after 20:00,” Laing said

He adds that the suspect tried to resist arrest.

Laing said the family of the mother and the suspect cooperated with the police in providing information and all leads were followed up.

Laing confirmed that the suspect is not a gang member, but he is allegedly a drug addict. “This is yet another case where an innocent life was destroyed because of the major drug problem in the area. The police of Philippi is very shocked by the violence used against this innocent child,” Laing said.

The suspect appeared in court yesterday.
