Two candidates are vying for your vote in the Ward 72 by-election tomorrow.

They are Kevin Southgate and Henry Moses.

You can head to the various voting polls in Ward 72 on Wednesday 1 April.

This by-election comes after the resignation of previous ward councillor Jan Burger.

Southgate says he is ready to take on the task as the new ward councillor.

As a businessman himself, Southgate adds creating employment in the ward is a priority for him.

“I will work to ensure that opportunities are created in the business sector for all the people in our ward. I would like to see small businesses develop and grow,” he says.

He also adds service delivery is a priority that he will attend to, should he be successful in the by-election.

“Service delivery is a priority for me. I will do everything in my power to ensure that all the residents of our ward receive the service delivery they deserve,” he says.

Southgate also adds that communication channels between the community and a ward councillor is very important and he will endeavour to keep this channel open to his community.

“I will have regular feedback meetings with the community and inform them of changes that may occur in the ward. I will do everything in my power to ensure that we maintain a responsible, clean and efficient local government,” Southgate says.

Southgate adds he was born and raised in Heathfield and has since opened his own bicycle shop in the area.

“I have a passion for the community and I enjoy working in the community. I am also actively involved in the community as I served as chairperson of our local community police forum. I also serve as a chairperson on various other committees in the community,” he says.

Southgate is a Democratic Alliance candidate for the by-election.

Opposition candidate standing for the African National Congress, Moses says he looks forward to working even more with the community covered under Ward 72.

“I am a resident of Retreat and have been quite involved with the community over the years. I understand the needs of this community and look forward to tackling these head on,” Moses says.

Moses adds he has also served on various committees in the area.

“I served on the Steenberg Retreat Ratepayers’ Association as a deputy chairperson and have also been involved with our neighbourhood watch to ensure the safety of the community,” he adds.

Moses says if he is elected as the new Ward 72 councillor, he will prioritise job opportunities. “I will see to it that our areas in the community is clean by means of street sweeping and the maintenance of our parks and recreational facilities. This will also open the door for employment opportunities for our residents through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP),” Moses explains. He also promises to prioritise the public pool facility that has been on hold for just over two years. “Residents are perturbed by the delay at the public pool, this will definitely receive attention. I will also see to it that our park and recreational facilities across the ward are seen to,” he concludes
