Subcouncil 12 and a delegation of homeless people joined hundreds of others in celebrating World Homeless Day, recognised annually on 27 October.

The event held at Turfhall sports complex in Lansdowne saw the group of homeless people, led by the Mitchell’s Plain Local Network of Care, participate in a homeless sports competition and beauty pageant.

The event aims to cement the City’s intension to promote healthier alternatives whilst pursuing solutions to successfully rehabilitating homeless people back into communities.

“Homelessness is a worldwide phenomenon. Needless to say it’s not unique to Cape Town and more locally Mitchell’s Plain,” said Eddie Andrews, subcouncil chairperson in a statement.

“It’s our intention to successfully rehabilitate homeless persons into society by ascertaining where family members reside and, where possible, provide temporary employment in the City’s Expanded Public Works Programme.”

He says the council acknowledges and supports the social development and early childhood development department’s intention to:

. Acknowledge World Homeless Day;

. Point out the good works of service providers;

. Lead interventions through the City’s street peoples programme; and

. Form an advisory group on homelessness.
