Health facilities in the Western Cape are often scrutinised by the public for a number of possible shortcomings, but very few are aware of the various facility boards who deal with constructive feedback.

Implemented by the Western Cape minister of health, the Western Cape Health Facility Boards Act was introduced in 2001 to ensure management at all public health facilities are accountable to, and have the support of, their communities and manage their resources responsibly and effectively.

Lentegeur Hospital has its own health facility board that was established in 2003.

“The health facility board continuously strives to ensure optimal corporate and clinical governance, fundraising, community involvement, and formulate strategies and policies to assist the management of the facility,” says Francois van der Watt, CEO of Lentegeur Hospital.

Magdaleen Erasmus, a clinical social worker, finds great joy and fulfilment in her role as chairperson of the Lentegeur Hospital’s health facility board.

“I have been a member of the Lentegeur Hospital’s health facility board for the past three years. Being a part of the health facility board has allowed me to continue playing an active role in safeguarding the integrity and welfare of psychiatric clients in the community,” she says.

Van der Watt explains apart from the clinical, non-clinical and academic representation, the community is also represented by individuals on this committee.

These residents play a vital role in ensuring that needs, concerns and recommendations of clients and the community are properly addressed.

“We encourage community members who want to become actively involved in the development and future of Lentegeur Hospital to submit their applications to be part of the health facility board,” says Van der Watt.

He advises that community members who are interested in becoming members of the health facility board should submit a copy of their CV accompanied by a recommendation letter to the office of the health facility board at Lentegeur Hospital.

“Recommendation letters may come from an organisation such as non-governmental organisations, religious organisations, civic organisations, gender organisations and community-based organisations,” says Van der Watt.

“It has been a wonderful privilege for me to be a member of Lentegeur Hospital’s health facility board. I encourage those who want to make a difference in their community to be a part of this great initiative and assist in the development of the facility and its clients,” says Erasmus.
