I’m a biker and you should keep me out

2015-07-07 06:01

It was with great interest that I read the People’s Post article on the Constantia greenbelt being opened to cyclists (“Bikes race to trails”, 23 June).

I myself have a wildcard/activities card for cycling and got it just before the great fire hit. So, sadly the card remains unused and I don’t have many places to go mountain biking, which I sorely miss. I also run on the greenbelts and walk my dogs there. So I guess I represent both sides and understand the frustration of not having anywhere to go mountain biking.

There are a few realities to point out.

Cyclists are already contravening and blatantly disrespecting the current rules and guidelines for greenbelts and doing it in a rather obnoxious and carefree manner. I have had words with a few of them whom I have spotted on the greenbelt.

If cyclists can’t respect simple rules that are in existence, what it going to make their self-policing system work? If they cannot respect the current code of conduct what will make the new one more effective?

There are very few animal- and child-friendly spaces where one doesn’t have to walk without fear of being frightened or knocked over by a passing cyclist. I understand that tracks will be separate but at present cyclists aren’t obeying current rules and we’ve had to jump in to bushes to avoid being knocked by them.

While I am sure these tracks would be used by families having fun rides, these aren’t the bulk of the mountain bikers who will be drawn here. The mountain bikers represented are mainly a serious bunch who want to get a decent ride in. These tracks will take a pounding. One only had to have gone cycling on a Saturday morning in Tokai to see the number and calibre of cyclist.

While I understand the frustration of cyclists there are other places to go in the Northern suburbs and City Bowl and in time Tokai will once again be open.

I am not convinced that an accurate assessment of the vegetation has been done as these areas are far more delicate than the Tokai forest.

As a cyclist I am completely opposed to this, as I still do hold this area in high regard and would rather see it protected
