The City of Cape Town library and information services department has celebrated the achievements of staff at its annual service recognition awards at Dulcie September Hall in Athlone.

Belinda Walker, mayoral committee member for comunity services and special projects, says the librarians are more than book keepers.

“Our libraries have become the hubs of learning, information and relaxation. Librarians ensure that these cultural and community centres are spaces for sharing knowledge,” she says.

Assistant librarian Riaan Abrahams from Manenberg library received the award for Staff Member of the Year.

The Reading Team of the Year was awarded to the libraries in district 4 (Hanover Park, Manenberg, Athlone, Rylands, Bridgetown, Heideveld, Belhar, Bishop Lavis, Bonteheuwel, Crossroads, Delft, Delft South, Gugulethu, Nyanga, Valhalla Park).

Heideveld library received the award for Best Display of the Year under the theme “Connect @ your library”.

Friends of the libraries, retiring and long-serving staff members were also honoured at the event.

“It is important for our residents to connect to our libraries and make them the desired one-stop, socially inclusive spaces that connect them to family, friends, technologies, information and the world,” says Walker
