A 61-year-old man from New Horizons was arrested on charges of dealing in liquor without a license on Tuesday.

Grassy Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith says the sector three manager received information about the illegal shebeen being operated.

“Upon arriving at the residence the member spoke to the owner who confirmed that he is selling liquor. Upon searching the fridges members found 147 beers and 13 empty crates. The previous week the same shebeen was searched and 31 850F of alcohol was confiscated and the same suspect was arrested,” Kleinsmith says.

In an other incident on Wednesday at 12:00, Kleinsmith says the Grassy Park crime prevention unit members were doing crime prevention patrols when they noticed a suspicious looking man.

“When the suspect saw the marked police vehicle he changed direction. Members then approached the man and searched him, but found nothing. The suspect was hesitant to remove his cap, but when members removed it they found 98 live .22 rounds in a plastic bag,” Kleinsmith says.

The 31-year-old suspect from Grassy Park was arrested on charges of possession of illegal ammunition.

“The station commander Colonel Shawn van Wyk says police will continue clamping down on crime and the perpetrators thereof. Police will maintain their zero tolerance approach in the combatting and investigation of crime. Strengthening the partnership between the community and the police is high on the agenda as it is contributing to reducing crime and the apprehension of the perpetrators thereof,” Kleinsmith adds.

Anyone with information on crime can call the police on 021 700 3940 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
