With the retirement of Warrant Officer Theo Oliver, who served the community for 32 years, the Strandfontein police have welcomed a new sector commander.

Newly appointed Constable Ashley Luyt will be taking over from Oliver.

Strandfontein Community Police Forum (CPF) chairperson Sandy Schuter says Oliver was very active and passionate about community policing while tirelessly working hand in hand with the CPF.

“It has been a long and fruitful partnership and such a pleasure working with Warrant Officer Oliver. He has been a pillar of our structures for years and was the one person I could call on at any time; we did everything together. Community policing is his passion; he was the glue that kept everything together. It’s sad to see him leave but when a man has to retire then he has to retire,” she says.

“He fulfilled his purpose and paved the way for younger blood.”

ReplacementThe CPF has worked with Luyt on the patrol van for a few years and now he is eager to take on greater responsibility, says Schuter.

The CPF will be working very closely with Luyt.

“Once he finds his feet internally, we will introduce him formally to the community as our new sector commander. We are looking forward to maintaining the partnership and would like to wish Warrant Officer Oliver a relaxing retirement. We’ll miss you dearly. Nothing and no-one can ever replace you and the quality you’ve brought into forming what we have here in Strandfontein, but I’m certain Constable Luyt is capable of delivering. We have full confidence in him and will support our sector commander,” she says.

Schuter urges residents to bear in mind that Luyt is still in the learning process and will make mistakes along the way.

She adds that with residents’ support he will help them in combating crime.

Aggressive“We are on a mission to clean our streets and we aim to eradicate crime by strengthening our community by setting up more street committees. With Constable Luyt, we will accomplish this as aggressively as we did when Warrant Officer Oliver was here,” she says.

The CPF, Neighbourhood Watch, victim support and street committees say they also wish Warrant Officer Oliver well on his retirement.
