Men shot in Ottery

2015-11-10 06:00

Two men were shot, one of whom died, in Ottery last week.

Grassy Park police station spokesperson Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith says the incident occurred on Friday afternoon.

“Police were called to a scene in New Ottery Road (at the taxi rank). Upon arrival at the scene members found a 30-year-old man fatally wounded,” she says.

The man was found to have been shot in the head and upper body. Another man between the age of 30 and 35 had been shot in the back.

Kleinsmith says according to witnesses on the scene the deceased and other victim were sitting inside a taxi when two suspects came and started to shoot at them.

“A case of murder and attempted murder was opened for investigation,” she says. No arrests have been made yet.

Visible patrols and other units, as well as other law enforcements agencies, are deployed in the area, she says.

Kleinmsith says the area was not declared a red zone, but Parkwood, Lotus River and Ottery are currently experiencing gang violence.

Police station commander Shawn van Wyk says police will continue clamping down on crime.

“Police will maintain their zero-tolerance approach in the combatting and investigation of crime,” he says.
