Residents of the Joe Slovo housing project next to the N2 will have fewer disruptions in their electricity service thanks to an infrastructure upgrade.

The upgrade by the City of Cape Town was necessary for the next phases of the housing project.

It involved replacing the overhead power line that ran through the area and over the N2 with an underground cable.

The City says the overhead line was not high enough for further residential development to take place safely.

The project cost R80.5m, which includes a saving of R6m because aluminium was used instead of copper, which will also deter vandalism.

“The upgrade went off without a hitch,” says Ernest Sonnenberg, mayoral committee member for utility services.

“It is incredibly validating to see large projects that cut across directorates being rolled out successfully, with each department doing its part with the bigger picture in mind.

“This housing project aims to transform the area’s informal settlements into a dignified community while minimising the relocation of residents.

“I am very pleased that the electricity services department is efficiently laying the groundwork that will allow this flagship project the greatest chance of success,” he says
