Pupils of Chapel Street Primary School in Woodstock were blown away by the new work of art on the walls close to their play area when they went back to school yesterday.

Last week staff members of MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet got their hands dirty and mixed colours to come up with some art that would last forever and cheer the children up as they play.

The school is part of the community of learning principals and actively engaged in the Symphonia for South Africa Partners for Possibility initiative, which is supported by MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet. As a “Partner for Possibility” school, the school has been partnered with Woolworths Financial Services to support and assist the school holistically with things like staff development and training, physical resources and staff volunteer projects.

Three months ago the volunteers planted a garden and they noticed other things that could be done to improve the school premises and make it friendlier.

They have now painted a mural close to the garden. The theme of the mural is “Community and Garden” to promote diversity and community involvement and to instil a sense of pride in pupils, teachers and parents.

The mural includes rainbow colours, a man, child, vegetables and animals – symbols of things they wish for the garden and the school as a whole.

Helene Brand, marketing manager of Myschool MyVillage MyPlanet, says they want to create a sense of pride.

“We want everyone to take better care of the school. By doing this everyone will feel proud to be associated with the school and will want to do more to look after it. We want to create a space for everyone to be proud of in the community. We want everyone to work together to improve the image of the school.

“When we did the garden we saw that the wall looked old and it was just plain facebrick. We thought we should do something. This is the area where the kids play, so they must enjoy their space,” she says.

Apart from the garden and the mural MySchool is also helping out in other ways that the school might need.

Brand says they want it to be a long-lasting partnership.

“We want this to work out for long, not to come today and disappear. We have to do a proper needs analysis and hear what it is that they need the most. Then we help them. None of what has been done was done in isolation, the school has been involved and we want everyone to come together,” says Brand.

MySchool works with more than 8000 schools and the organisation wishes to help more schools. Those who want to participate in improving schools can sign up for free and select up to three schools or charities they want to support. Each time they shop at partner stores some of the money they spend will be donated to schools.

Those who want to sign up can fill in a form online at, call 0860 100 445 or get it at Woolworths
