Murderer gets life

2015-05-05 06:00

A25-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison in connection with a 2013 murder case.

Detectives of Manenberg police station, under the command of Colonel Roslyn Johnson, were successful in securing a life sentence plus an additional 25 years’ imprisonment for Omar Abrahams who operated under the alias Marie Biscuits.

He was sentenced in the Khayelitsha Regional Court on 1 April.

Abrahams fired several shots at a 30-year-old man in Renoster Road on 20 December 2013, says police spokesperson Lieutenant Ian Bennett.

“The man died of bullet wounds to his face and chest. As there were no witnesses the detectives worked tirelessly to secure evidence against the perpetrator. Only hard work, dedication and perseverance by Warrant Officer Rodney Abrahams, Sergeant Thembinkosi Tyobeka and Constable Filton Abrahams led to the arrest of the man,” Bennett says.

Thanks to solid statements and information gathered the court imposed the maximum sentence, sending a strong message to other criminals.

“The courts will not allow gang violence to flourish, holding the community hostage. Young people can thrive and become good citizens,” Bennett says.

An additional five years’ imprisonment was added as Abrahams is a member of a gang.

“Manenberg police management is very pleased with the result and wants to assure the community that all cases under investigation receive quality and immediate attention by dedicated detectives.

“We will continue to encourage the community to relay information so that the appropriate action will be taken against perpetrators and the law can take its course so that we can stop the gang activity within our community,” Bennett says.
