The City of Cape Town has won a national award for a wheelie bin.

It was recognised at the Recycled Product of the Year awards, hosted by the South African Plastics Recycling Organisation (Sapro) and Plastics SA and held on Monday last week.

The Sapro trophy was awarded to the City and Mpact Containers for their “Fifty/50” wheelie bin that was entered in the Recycled Content category.

The new bins carry a 10-year guarantee and are subjected to all necessary testing and performance requirements.

The competition acknowledges products that are made from recycled material and encourages brand owners to consider recycled plastics as a material of choice.

Sapro chairperson Jaco Breytenbach says that they had high hopes when they launched their first awards in 2010.

“Each year that we host this competition, it is proven over again that talent runs broad and deep in our country and that the plastics recycling industry has an important role to play in South Africa,” he says.

Barbara Thompson, national deputy minister of environmental affairs, officiated the opening of the awards and said: “Last year South Africa managed to recycle 315 600 tons of all plastics products manufactured back into raw material.

“This is an impressive feat in anybody’s language, placing South Africa amongst the top mechanical recycling countries in the world.”
