Claremont Detective Constable Nimrood Luke has been awarded for nabbing nine people suspected of an armed robbery at Cavendish Square in April last year.

He has been named the best police officer in the province. He will soon compete with police officers of other provinces for bragging rights to the top cop of the country. The awards are handed out annually.

Luke was off duty when he spotted the robbery suspects.

Seeing a suspicious car offloading goods to another car raised his eyebrows. He then saw one of the people matched an identity kit. He called for the flying squad to back him up and he made the first arrest.

He managed to arrest all the suspects and recover all the goods that were stolen.

It is the first time that a police officer of Claremont police station has received this award. Sergeant Lindela Dubela, spokesperson for Claremont police station, says it makes them proud.

“This is what we call going the extra mile. He made the arrests when he was off duty and this shows the commitment and vigilance that our police officers have. It really shows police are committed to their work, whether they are on duty or not, and for that we are very grateful,” says Dubela.

Dubela adds that Luke loves his job.

“He is so presentable and he is always on time. He loves what he does. He is a very nice person to work with,” he says.

Abdul Kerbelker, chairperson of the Claremont police forum, says they are also proud of Luke’s achievement.

“It makes us proud to see police following through.”
