Some of Cape Town’s top comedy talents will be gathering at the Pump House in the Waterfront for a very good cause on Monday 25 May.

Mel “I make you look Good” Jones, Khanyiso “What the EFF” Kenka and headline act Carl “You gonna eat that?” Weber will be in action at the Comedy Club to help a special young girl from Uitsig with her hearing.

Launelle Douman, 12, who attends school in Parow East was diagnosed with profound hearing loss at the end of October 2012.

Only one hearing aid“I was fitted with a left hearing aid as it was too expensive for my family to buy two hearing aids at the same time,” Launelle says.

“My hearing was re-tested a year later and my ability to hear low pitches in my left ear became a lot worse. Because my hearing is deteriorating, I need to continue wearing my left hearing aid, but I now need to get a cochlear implant in the right ear.”

This hearing loss did not deter her from still striving to achieve her potential putting in hours of extra tutoring to succeed.

“I am blessed to have progressed to Grade 6 without failing or being kept behind. I would love to keep up with my 60% pass rate which can definitely improve if I have the implant.

Cochlear implant “The cochlear implant will give me the best chance of a normal education, but the medical tests, the cochlear implant and the operation are very expensive and that is why I am so thankful of these comedians who have come together to help us raise the money,” she said.

She added that despite her hearing loss she still tries her best to live a normal life.

“I find it difficult to hear my teachers and tutors at school, and my family at home even with the left hearing aid.

“But, I managed to qualify for the choir and I still do spiritual dancing at church and play the piano in music class.

“Although I am not sure how I have done this, I have taught myself to lip read when people speak to me. I love to dance because this helps me to express myself in other ways.”

While Lounelle wants the cochlear implant to enhance her life she also wants it to be a bigger part in the life of her younger brother.

“I get on very well with my six-year-old brother.

“It is one of my biggest fears that I won’t be able to be the sister he can depend on because of my hearing impairment.

“My brother has asthma so I know that he also has to fight similar battles to mine, like being scared that people will think we are different to everyone else.

“I have accepted that I may be treated differently in the world but I know that God will always love and accept me.”

ExpensiveA cochlear implant is expensive and the family aims to raise the R360 000 for the cochlear implant and the comedy event is one of the many events that they are planning.

Tickets for the event which starts at 20:30 are R120 and they are still looking for sponsors of some prizes on the evening.
