The thought-provoking John will be back on stage at the Artscape Arena from Thursday 21 to Saturday 30 May.

The production tells the story of a highly intelligent man. The only thing that makes sense in his life are numbers, until he falls in love and has his first sexual experience. It starts haunting him, and as he grows older he withdraws deeper into himself, struggling to interact with people on a social level. The story focuses on John’s journey as he delves in to the underworld of sex workers in the hope of finding a replacement for his first love, through them.

Written and performed by Andre Lombard from Muizenberg and directed by Wellington’s Jeremeo le Cordeur, John essentially explores the sex worker industry, sometimes uncomfortably so.

“It’s all too easy to forget that behind every sex worker is a story, and a motivation for what they do,” Andre says.

“Sex workers are all too often judged on assumptions and stereotyped. We applaud the attempt to reflect the reality and complexity of sex worker’s lives in this play,” says Ishtar Lakhani of Sweat (the Sex Worker Education and Advocacy Taskforce).

With John, audiences are granted access into the controversial world of the sex workers that live on the periphery of our society.

The cast also includes actress Melissa Haiden from Gardens.

John carries a 16SNL age restriction. Tickets cost R100 or R80 for scholars older than 16, students, pensioners and block bookings from Computicket. WIN! WIN! WIN!

Five readers can each win double tickets to see John on Thursday 21 May. SMS the word “john” to 45527 before 12:00 on Friday to enter. SMSes cost R1.50

How much food do you need to concentrate?

We have been taught that we need three meals a day in order to make it through the day and while most of us indulge in more than our fair share there is a large portion of South Africans who are living off barely enough to sustain them.
