Last week’s Open Book festival was filled with many activities to enjoy. Events featured local and international writers and included poetry workshops, a marketplace for comic book talent, workshops at the Central library and story times for children.

The Fugard Theatre, several libraries and the Book Lounge served as venues for the festival which ended on Sunday.

Rondebosch library hosted a youth festival, during which children’s book illustrator and author Chris Riddell, the UK’s Children’s Laureate, visited the library. He spoke about his love for librarians and reading before signing books for visitors.

Garreth Bloor, mayoral committee member for tourism, events and economic development, says Open Book is a celebration of books and authors.

“It also provides a platform for crucial discussions about the accessibility of books. This is an important event on the literary calendar,” says Bloor.

“The festival gives readers an opportunity to interact with authors, gives aspiring writers a rare glimpse into the thought processes that go into producing a literary work, and also reinforcing a love of reading. Young and old are able to delve into the literary world and gain first-hand knowledge of what really happens between the pages,” adds Bloor.
