Operation Fiela yields results

Kensington Police officers in partnership with Law Enforcement and the Department of Home Affairs nabbed 18 foreigners for contravening the refugee Act 130 of 1988.

The act says that a foreign nation is to give effect within the Republic of South Africa to the relevant international legal instruments, principles and standards relating to refugees; to provide for the reception into South Africa of asylum seekers; to regulate applications for and recognition of refugee status; to provide for the rights and obligations flowing from such status; and to provide for matters connected therewith.

The arrest comes after an inspection that was done on foreign nationals at 81 Second Avenue. Those that were arrested will be charged according to the act and they are currently being detained at the Maitland Police Station. During the operation certain premises and tuck shops were raided and illegal cigarettes were consticated. In a separate incident Kensington Police have had successfull convictions. Andre Fransman was sentenced to 36 years imprisonment for copper theft. Sherwin de Liiy, Conway Petersen and Devano Smith were also sentenced to five years for attempted murder.
