In an effort to ward off the cold this winter, motoring enthusiasts in the city and ward councillor Suzette Little have teamed up for a blanket run in July.

Together with Little, TPDZ Photography will launch the event on Saturday 25 July at Athlone Stadium. Hundreds of cars are expected to roll through the gates with blanket donations.

One of the team members, Gustav Serfontein, says the initiative was made possible because the City “finally acknowledges that the motoring fraternity is not only about speed and sound”.

“But [we are] also about sharing and caring for the community. This is going to be a big event and we want it to be as successful as possible,” Serfontein says.

Asked why they agreed to team up with the City for the blanket run, Serfontein speaks about the need to keep people warm.

“Athlone in itself has many shelters, but the one thing they lack is the ability to keep all these people warm. Our target is to get 500 blanket donations on the day,” he says.

Convoy to stadiumHe adds he expects to see more than 800 cars rolling through for the event.

The drive will take place in convoy style from Sunrise Beach, Muizenberg to the Stadium with traffic officials.

Organisations that will benefit from the event have been identified by Little.

A handover to these organisations will be done on the day.

“Together with the blanket donations made on the day, there will be an entry fee. This money will be donated to the various organisations as well,” Serfontein confirms.

The day also promises fun for the family as a free play centre for children will be created, including food stalls. Show bikes and cars will be displayed during the day.

Monthly eventSerfontein adds the event will be the first instalment of many more to follow throughout the year. “We’re planning a monthly community event at Nantes Park in order to bring about a positive activity portfolio at the park. We have also received lots of support from the motoring fraternity, which includes sponsorships by Dent Expert and RGR Graphix,” he says.
