Police arrest almost 60

Almost 60 suspects have been arrested in one week in the Athlone area.

Eleven suspects were arrested for drug-related crimes and nine houses were searched for drugs after being identified by the community.

Over 250 stop-and-searches were carried out at four control points in the area and in one search a person was arrested for possession of house-breaking implements.

Five shebeen operations were carried out which resulted in one arrest with liquor confiscated from the shebeen.

Second-hand shops were also targeted – five dealers were visited in an effort to look for counterfeit goods.

Nine wanted people were arrested as a result of two tracking operations in the area.

Another person was arrested for possessing a firearm, which was also confiscated.

The Athlone police station saw almost 40 cases of crimes against woman and children reported in the same week.

An arrest was made for rape and two for the contravention of a protection order.

Three arrests were made for common assault and a further four for assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Another four arrests were made for theft, two for malicious damage to property and two for armed robbery
