The onset of the cooler weather usually sends most people indoors, waiting for warmer weather to return before venturing out for a well-deserved break.

But the municipal coastal resorts offer a cosy getaway at affordable prices, which make them ideal for a mid-year winter break.

The City of Cape Town manages 12 resorts in prime locations along Cape Town’s coastline with a range of accommodation types in chalets and caravan and camping sites available.

Some resorts also boast conference facilities, swimming pools and tidal pools. They are a perfect base for exploring the wonders of Cape Town’s coastal environment.

All resorts are conveniently located in close proximity to shops, shopping centres and other tourist attractions and many offer magnificent views over the coastline and the surrounding mountains.

For nature lovers, the Kogel Bay, Bluewaters, Zandvlei, Soetwater and Silwerstroom resorts are located in or next to nature conservation areas. Silwerstroom Resort looks onto an unbroken stretch of sand for some three kilometers.

All resorts cater for families. Both the Bluewaters and Monwabisi Resorts have newly refurbished chalets and a multitude of picnic and braai facilities available. A family of four can spend two nights at either of these resorts for under R350.

The Soetwater Resort was mentioned as one of the top 25 caravan and camping sites in South Africa by the Travelstart blog. Located between Kommetjie and Scarborough, this stunning resort is popular for a weekend retreat. It is within walking distance to the Slangkop lighthouse and in close proximity to Kalk Bay, Simon’s Town and Cape Point.

Millers Point Resort makes for a perfect day’s outing on a clear winter day. A spectacular setting is created by the dramatic land-sea contrast, with a coastal terrace backed by the steep escarpment slopes and ridges of the Swartklip mountains.

For those looking for an active holiday, the Zandvlei Resort offers visitors a range of water sports such as kayaking, sailing, windsurfing and canoeing.

Belinda Walker, mayoral committee member community services and special projects, says Cape Town’s coastal recreational spots serve as primary access points to the coastline for tourists and residents.

“The City’s resorts are a key element within the coastal recreational nodes which enhance visitors’ experience of the coastline and the surrounding natural areas.

“Set in different locations with different characteristics, these resorts cater for a range of visitor experiences – from personal retreats and nature, to adventure-filled, active holidays,” she says.
