Rocklands High School has been crowned the champion of the first ward 78 debating competition.

Rocklands and Westridge high schools participated in the competition at the Lentegeur subcouncil chambers on Tuesday last week

The event comprised three topics and pupils debated about the impact of social media on society, youth participation in community structures and consequences of teenage pregnancy.

The competition was coordinated by the senior librarian at Westridge library, Allison Jantjies, and funded through the ward allocation budget.

Subcouncil chairperson and ward councillor Eddie Andrews highlighted the importance of critical thinking and the ability to articulate appropriately on Tuesday.

He further declared the importance for youngsters to keep on talking about issues they faced as they could contribute towards sustainable solutions.

The participants of Rocklands High School were crowned the champions after winning two of the three sessions.

Andrews said the competition would be held annually and interested high schools could contact him to participate in the next event.
