Siviwe Nkombi from Itheko running club in Rondebosch won the Karoo 80km ultra-marathon in Laingsburg on Saturday.

The 26-year-old long distance athlete challenged the out-and-back course of the new route of the Karoo town in perfect condition. The scenic course on the R323 to Ladysmith proved gruelling for the large group of athletes.

Nkombi, however, had to work hard over the hilly course and also had to negotiate a stretch of 7km of gravel road before taking control after the 50km mark.

He opened up a lead of more than 800m on his rivals from Germiston, Thulane Magagula and Zwelithini Vapi.

With the Karoo sun starting to make its presence felt, Nkombi raced over the finish line in 5:35:00 to clinch his first ultra title.

“This is a very tough race. I started off wanting to run four minutes per kilometre and it’s worked. Boy jô it’s tough. But I will be back,” said Nkombi.

The woman’s race was won by Vanessa Bowman of Kempton Road Runners in 7:18:07. Capetonian Martha Pretorius, now running in the colours of the South African national defence force, finished second in 7:47:00.
