New Zealand’s Black Caps bundled the Proteas out of the Cricket World Cup and the All Blacks usually have a stonghold over the Springboks on the rugby field, but payback was sweet on Friday last week when South Africa’s Rhinos beat New Zealand’s Ice Blacks 3-1.

The teams played in the International Ice Hockey Federation’s Ice Hockey World Championship (Division II – Group B) which took place at the Ice Station at GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World last week.

Unfortunately, the Rhinos could only manage to win one out of five matches and ended bottom of the log. China ended on top with five wins from five matches. Other teams that took part were Bulgaria, Israel and Mexico.

Omar Maged reports that South Africa’s Uthman Samaai received the South African Player of the Tournament award as well as two Most Valuable Player awards.

Samaai, who hails from Newlands, is studying at Nazereth College in Rochester, New York. He plays his hockey for the Golden Flyers, a division 3 college outfit in the USA. It was evident that the valuable experience he is gaining playing in the USA will stand SA in good stead in future tournaments
