Although the temporary relocation of the GF Jooste Hospital to the Heideveld Community Day Centre (CDC) has been smooth, the clinic still faces some major challenges due to an influx in patients.

Councillor Anthony Moses says these challenges include long queues, administration problems with filing and appointments, rude staff, slow service, a lack of safety and security and theft from cars in the parking lot.

He says the biggest concern is the safety of patients at the clinic. “We’ve had incidents of gang violence and cars have been broken into and batteries stolen.”

However, Sithembiso Magubane, spokesperson of district health services and programmes at the provincial health department, says: “As with any functioning health facility, we have received a few complaints which vary in nature but this is normal at any public health facility.”

He says these complaints have been managed according to national core standards and through the department’s complaints hotline. “The closure of the GF Jooste Hospital and the influx of clients to the Heideveld Emergency Centre does not affect the service delivery at Heideveld Community Day Centre, as the emergency service and primary health care services are two different and separate amenities, which do not necessarily impact on each other.”

According to Magubane, services offered at the Heideveld Emergency Centre include emergency care for everyone in the Klipfontein subdistrict. “It attends to approximately 1600 patients per month.”

Magubane says services previously delivered at GF Jooste have been temporarily relocated to Heideveld CDC for emergencies and Mowbray Maternity Hospital and Mitchell’s Plain Hospital for emergencies and other health services until the new GF Jooste Hospital is fully renovated and operational again. “Not all patients are thus referred to Heideveld.”

People’s Post previously reported the on-site work at GF Jooste, which will cost R785 million, will begin this year or the next and may be completed in 2018 or 2019.

Magubane says the emergency centre at Heideveld has a functional triage centre, a Thuthuzela rape crisis centre and an upgraded pharmacy. “Heideveld CDC is a primary health facility and would refer clients to the next level of care (Mitchell’s Plain Hospital, Groote Schuur Hospital or Mowbray Maternity Hospital) for specialised services.

“It is a 24-hour facility and also has an overnight ward. The staff and equipment were transferred to Heideveld CDC.”

The following staff services are offered: 37 medical practitioners, 10 medical specialists, 12 nursing assistants, 13 professional nurses, two physiotherapists and one pharmacist.

Moses concludes: “Although there are some operational challenges, we are fortunate to have a clinic here in Heideveld. We have among others a disease centre, babycare facility and trauma centre – a vast amount of services are available to the community.”
