After years of serving meals for community children from her small home, Kathy Faro now has a brand new facility.

Generously donated by Hosa, a branch of a German NGO, Faro can now cook and provide meals to more than 30 children every day.

“The children can sit inside and eat now,” she says.

Her journey started when her pastor saw children going hungry in 7de Laan informal settlement.

“At first we fed the children once a week, now we can feed them every day,” she says.

Faro believes that no child should go hungry. The mother of four has been active and passionate about early childhood development for 17 years and is excited to be in the new building.

“The new space has enabled me to feed many more children, not only from 7de Laan. The children are important,” she says.

Faro moved in on Women’s Day and celebrated with a big launch. The building is situated in the front of the settlement.

The settlement has more than 100 families living there.

The facility took one month to complete and is fitted with a full kitchen and enough space to have all the children seated through supper.

She and her two helpers, Judie Phillips and Angelique Henneke, ensure that a variety of meals – from soup to curries and stews – are prepared.

Although Faro has donations, she believes that more can be done.

“If there is anyone who would like to donate or volunteer they are more than welcome to do so,” she says.
