The new ward 72 councillor is Kevin Southgate.

Southgate will be taking over as the new ward councillor after former councillor Jan Burger resigned from his position.

Southgate was the interim ward councillor leading up to the by-elections on Wednesday 1 April.

He says he is delighted at the victory and looks forward to working with the community of ward 72.

The by-elections managed to garner just over 4 000 valid voters at the various voting stations.

Southgate adds he is delighted with the results.

“My aim was to at least win by 95% but much to my surprise, I won the elections by 97%. I am excited to start the journey as ward councillor,” he says.

Southgate says he is overwhelmed by the support he received from the voters in the area.

“But now comes the time for hard work and making service delivery happen in our ward. I have said it before and will say again that I am committed to working with the community to ensure effective service delivery,” he says.

Southgate has thanked all who made it to the voting polls to cast their votes and placed their faith in him as the new ward councillor.

“To those who cast their votes I am grateful for their support. This will definitely be a journey for me and I intend to be a hands-on councillor.”

Southgate says colleagues of him came up to him saying he would have to dress up and be chauffeured around the area.

“According to them it was a very different election in terms of me being very casual about the whole day. I drove myself around and helped at the poll stations,” Southgate says.V
