2015-05-12 06:00

Steenberg police arrested several people in the last week for various crimes, including hijacking, housebreaking, theft and crimes related to drugs.

Constable Zodwa Kedama, spokesperson of Steenberg police, says a hijacking suspect was arrested at 11th Avenue in Lavender Hill on Wednesday last week at about 11:00.

“The police received information on the whereabouts of this suspect and on arrival at the address they surrounded the premises and the suspect was apprehended while trying to escape,” she says.

The police found one 9mm Parabellum pistol and 15 9mm live rounds on the suspect.

“He was arrested and detained at Steenberg. When ownership of the firearm was checked it came out positive on a Muizenberg case (reported as stolen),” she says.

The 32-year-old suspect appeared in Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Steenberg police also made 26 drug arrests and confiscated 95 tik bags, 11 mandrax pills and 51g dagga.

Three operations were held in which three arrests were made at spaza shops. “We confiscated counterfeit cigarettes at these spaza shops as well,” Kedama says.

A house in Botma Street in Steenberg was broken into and items stolen on Monday last week at about 23:30.

“It is alleged that the complainant and her husband went to Saudi Arabia for holiday,” she says. When the couple returned they saw that their garage door was forced open and items to the value of R3850 had been stolen.

“A 22-year-old male from Lavender Hill was arrested and appeared in Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday,” she says.

A hijacking occurred at Prince George Drive near the BP Garage on Sunday 3 May at about 00:35.

“It is alleged that the complainant was sitting in his vehicle, a green Opel Corsa, when an unknown man came up to him and threatened to shoot him while he asked the victim to hand over his car. The victim then jumped out of the car and fled the scene,” Kedama says. The following day a 24-year-old man form Seawinds was arrested and the vehicle recovered. He appeared in Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday last week
