Surfers get more showers on Prom

Areallocation of funding will provide for the installation of showers for surfers along the Sea Point Promenade.

The budget of R40 000 was allocated for the installation of benches at Milton beach. However, the project need not be implemented anymore as the benches will be procured through available funding for the current phase of the Sea Point Promenade upgrade.

The multimillion rand upgrade to the has seen the walkway repaved and landscaping of play areas improved. The upgrade has been completed between the Pavilion and Milton Road, including improvements to sections in Mouille Point. Work is scheduled to continue along the rest of the Promenade.

The funds will now be diverted to a project to install showers, in addressing a “dire need”.

An additional amount of R15 000, which had not been spent by the subcouncil in the last financial year, will also be used for the showers.

Ward councillor Jacques Weber says he has revived a request by the community for the installation of showers along the Promenade.

“There was a request by the surfing community to install some more showers at the surfing spots for them to use,” he explains.

“The Promenade is an open space and over the last two years we have tried to and are constantly trying to accommodate everyone. The surfing community uses most of the beaches in the area and the installation of more showers will allow them to rinse off the sea water after surfing.”
