A 19-year-old died in an alleged gang-related shooting in Kewtown on Monday last week.

The victim was walking between blocks 1 and 2 when he was struck by a single shot to the back. He died on the scene soon after.

No arrests have been made.

Witnesses allege the victim was a member of the Playboys gang. It is further alleged that the murderer is a member of the Americans.

People’s Post reported last week that Kewtown is one of the areas in Athlone with the highest level of crime, with gang violence happening more frequently.

In a separate incident on Friday, a 27-year-old man was killed in front of a residence in Heath Court in Kewtown.

“Athlone patrol van members attended to a complaint at the address. Upon arrival they found the victim lying on the ground bleeding from his mouth and nose. It was then found that the victim sustained a gunshot wound to the back of his head and left arm,” says Sergeant Zita Norman, Athlone police spokesperson.

She says the victim died on the scene due to the extent of his injuries and that circumstances surrounding the incident are unknown and it is also not known whether the two incidents are linked in any way.

. Meanwhile, police arrested 93 people in various drug searches at houses in the Mitchells Plain policing cluster. A further 210 arrests were made for various drug offences and drugs were confiscated, like 248g heroin, 326g tik, 265g mandrax, 3g cocaine and 846g dagga.

Eight fines to the value of R4 600 were issued at a roadblock, where a stolen car was also recovered.

18 operations were conducted at shebeens in which five people were arrested and 88 0226 alcohol was confiscated. Six counterfeit goods operations were conducted.

60 wanted people were arrested when police conducted 14 tracing operations, while another four arrests took place during 891 spaza shop visits where four firearms were seized.

94 crimes against women and children were reported, resulting in 25 arrests.

Anyone with information regarding the shootings can contact Athlone police on 021 697 9238 or 021 697 9239.
