Thank you to our volunteers

2015-05-19 06:00

I want to thank and acknowledge all volunteers, community workers and all those who unselfishly render a service to our communities. Your time, efforts, labour and commitment to serve are appreciated.

Without moaning you attend to a crisis, without a complaint you unselfishly use your car and airtime, you leave your family and warm beds to serve. It is often expected of you to sacrifice your family time, put your life at risk, comfort those in mourning and “be there”.

Whenever your car breaks down, your airtime runs out or you yourself are in need, do we hear you complain, ask for help or give up? No! You are always in the shadows whilst others get (take) the glory. It is expected of you to be there, it is expected of you to do it. It is expected of you never to be absent, take time out or object.

All because you are a volunteer. For that I salute you!

To all government department heads, officials and those in high places I want to say it’s time to acknowledge those who make your task easier. You get a salary (and fringe benefits) at the end of the month; they don’t have a pay day. You sit on the podium at the events, they sit in the crowd. You get served first; they are last in the queue. You get the shine, they go home empty-handed. They mobilise the community and implement (your) programmes and projects, you are made to look good.

Maybe next time you so eagerly and conveniently call on the volunteer, pause for a moment and ask, what will society (and my work environment) be like without our volunteers? What can I do to show my (and our) appreciation? Is the cheap worthless certificate (of appreciation!) or the once-off (limited budget) lunch enough?
