They saved the day – and the toad

Amid rumours that they were going to build houses across the road on the wetland, you can imagine the anxiety when we woke to find huge trucks and a bulldozer on the ready. Two unlikely figures seemed to be in control – Wally Petersen with his friendly doggie and a petite, energetic Suretha Dorse.

Under the watchful eye of Wally the driver of the bulldozer was reacting to the arm-waving and footsteps of Suretha as she ran up and down the vlei. She seemed to have a plan and suddenly it became apparent that they were not going to build anything!

The “lake” excavation was taking shape as she had the driver place each rock at critical points. Then came the trucks with a variety of indigenous plants and Wally made sure they were planted just where Suretha and he planned.

Suddenly we all became aware of the name Skilpadsvlei and the restoration of the wetland. This untidy vlei had been rehabilitated to be, among others, a breeding site for the endangered Western leopard toad.
