Upgrade of steps likely

2015-08-11 06:00

Upgrades to a Green Point thoroughfare are taking shape, step by step.

This as R125 000 has been allocated for the upgrading of public pathways and stairs in ward 54.

This should see Vesperdene steps in Green Point receiving an overhaul, says ward councillor Jacques Weber.

“We are currently assessing the costs of upgrades but at this current moment the Vesperdene steps look favourable for the upgrade,” he says.

The upgrade will include fixing the concrete steps, and should heritage approval be given, the steps may be tiled and the lower part of the steps opened for a better line of sight from the road. General landscaping and paving around the steps will also be carried out, Weber says.

“The steps are older than 60 years and therefore they fall into the heritage bracket. The removal or change of any structure that is protected by a heritage policy needs to be approved by the various bodies,” he explains.

“An application will be made to Heritage Western Cape and it would then decide if they are allowed or give suggestions.”

The commencement of the upgrade will depend on this approval, Weber says
