Wild-shooting man arrested

2015-09-01 06:00

After a man randomly opened fire in Eastridge, police were called to the scene by residents.

On Monday last week at 14:58 the Mitchell’s Plain police were executing routine patrols when they received a complaint of a man walking and firing shots in Baobab Street, says police spokesperson Constable Zandile Marashula.

“The officers arrived at the scene and saw a group of people in the street running. At this stage shots were still being fired. The officers chased the group and spotted a man running with a firearm,” says Marashula.

The suspect fired several shots at the police, who returned fire. The officers chased and cornered him and managed to arrest him. No-one was injured.

The 18-year-old man was arrested on charges of attempted murder and has already appeared in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrates’ Court on the said charges on Wednesday last week. The suspect’s bail was opposed and he remains in police custody.

“The police will not tolerate attacks on police. We will leave no stones unturned to ensure that the hard arm of the law is brought down on police killings and brutality.”
