Women’s space created

2015-05-05 06:00

An intimate space where women can come and talk about anything and everything.

This is what will be offered at the recently launched Women’s Centre at the New World Foundation in Lavender Hill.

The centre was formally introduced to a group of women who gathered on Tuesday 21 April.

These women, together with the project co-ordinator and project manager, have expressed their excitement for the facility that has been availed to the Lavender Hill Community.

Spearheaded by Lynette Oliver and Kim Pillay, both employed at the New World Foundation, say they are very eager to see the centre start operating daily.

“We are very excited that this centre has finally taken shape after lots of hard work that lovingly went into it. We have created a space where the women of our community can come to and enjoy a space they can be creative in or feed on each others life experiences,” Oliver says.

She adds the centre will cater to the all women who want a space they can share stories or be creative in. “We aim to have weekly and monthly programmes to be presented at the centre as well. We also intend to have different organisations who will visit the centre and host talks here for our women if they need to address certain issues.”

Oliver encouraged all women to visit the centre and to make use of it as much as possible.

“This will be a safe space where you can come and just relax or participate in an activity that you really enjoy. We want you to have fun and not be shy to come here for help if it’s needed.”

Oliver has encouraged and urged the community to support the centre by means of “desire and commitment”.

“This can only work if our community wants it to work. And we want our community to take ownership of this space we have created especially for them,” she adds.

Involvement from the youth in the area was also encouraged.

“We want our youth involved with programmes as such that will be offered at the centre. However, we do not want to take the shine away from our elderly as well. That is why it will be an integrated space where all walks of life can meet and share the space. Our elderly has paved the path for us so we need to follow on that,” she says.

Oliver says the centre will operate daily between 09:00 and 17:00 and no appointments will be needed except for counselling sessions.
