Five men were arrested for illegal gun possession after police acted on a tip-off about a planned heist in Lansdowne.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Nkululeko Mnyaka says the police received a call on Thursday 26 March at 16:00 from a reliable informant who said a robbery was going to take place in Lansdowne.

“The informant said that five men were planning to rob a truck which was offloading in the area and that suspects would be driving a Toyota Avanza with the registration CA 525 800,” Mnyaka says.

The Nyanga tactical response team followed up on the information provided.

Officers tracked the car down in Rouxton Road. “The officers stopped the Avanza and searched the suspects. The officers found a Corsair .22 calibre pistol with nine live rounds of ammunition,” Mnyaka says.

The suspects – aged between 21 and 27 – were arrested and face charges of possession of an unlicenced firearm and prohibited ammunition
