A skills development programme aimed at seeing an improvement to the lives of a group of people from Mitchell’s Plain has been completed with a graduation ceremony earlier this month.

On Monday 16 May, Subcouncil 12 chairperson Eddie Andrews awarded the completion certificates to the participants who participated in the W78 Hairdressing life skills project.

Each participant also received a hairdressing kit to the value of about R10 000.

The 10-day course commenced on Monday 29 February win partnership with Deofavente Hair Salon in Westgate.

The group was made up of single mothers, young women and one man.

The course concluded on Thursday 3 March and has resulted in five participants being afforded further training from the provincial department of social development.

The course covered chemicals, including colours, highlighting and relaxers, blow-drying, flat–ironing, setting, washing and basin etiquette.

Each participant received their respective certification for both practical and theoretical training.

In addition, the start-up kit will allow the participants to start their own businesses.

The project also aims to empower, educate and provide employment opportunities for 35 young women between the ages of 18 and 25.

They will receive training in nail art design, hair design and massage to assist them in gaining skills to become more marketable in finding employment and to start their own businesses
