Arrest for family murder

2016-11-29 06:01

A 31-year-old Zeekoevlei man has been arrested for the murder of an elderly family member.

Grassy Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith says the arrest was made on Monday 21 November by Sergeant Ricardo Goldsmith.

“The investigating officer, Goldsmith, arrested the man after investigations revealed a 71-year-old deceased man was murdered. The man was found dead at his residence in Zeekoevlei on Tuesday 8 November at about 03:00. Police were informed that the deceased died of natural causes as he was sickly and a medical history could be produced,” Kleinsmith explains.

On Friday 11 November an informer came to the investigating officer and told him that the deceased was murdered. An inquest was opened based on what informer said.

“The body was retrieved from the mortuary and an autopsy was done, which revealed the deceased was strangled to death. After all other leads were followed up and more information was gathered, Goldsmith made an arrest on Monday 21 November,” Kleinsmith says.

The suspect appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday 23 November and bail was denied.

“The suspect is related to the deceased and the motive is domestic-related. Grassy Park police will maintain a zero tolerance approach against criminals who take advantage of those that are fragile. Elderly neglect is a form of abuse and should be reported,” Kleinsmith says.
