A 41-year-old Hanover Park suspect was arrested after police found him in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition on Tuesday 11 May.

Philippi police spokesperson Lieutenant Lance Goliath says police received information at about 18:15 while busy with crime prevention duties in the Hanover Park area.

“On (Tuesday evening) at about 18:15 police were busy with crime prevention duty in Athburg Walk. Police spotted a suspicious looking man and approached him. Upon searching him police found a .22 Astra pistol and ammunition in his possession. Police confiscated the pistol and ammunition and arrested him for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition,” Goliath confirms.

The suspect appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

Goliath confirms the Hanover Park area has been experiencing various shootings.

“After experiencing sporadic shooting incidents, police are working around the clock through integrated police operations in order to address the shootings as well as other crimes, and bring the perpetrators to book,” he says.

The station commander, Colonel Dennis Abels, says police will continue clamping down on crime. Police say they will maintain their zero tolerance approach in the combatting and investigation of crime.

Abels commended his members for a job well done as well as the community for their involvement in reporting crime and criminals.
