Diep River police arrested 16 people for various crimes on Friday and Saturday.

On Friday evening from 20:30 Diep River police and metro police held a roadblock in the area. A total of 137 drivers were tested for drunk driving. Seven were arrested for driving over the legal limit and 29 fines were written.

Four more arrests for possession of drugs, one for house breaking and one for possession of a dangerous weapon.

In the early hours of Saturday morning at 01:00 the neighbourhood watch members noticed a suspicious vehicle with three occupants and they gave a chase.

Diep River police spokesperson Warrant Officer Keith Chandler says the call was responded to by BH security and Law Enforcement officers. “When the suspicious vehicle noticed they were being followed the suspects drove off at high speed in an attempt to flee but lost control of the vehicle and collided with a pavement on the corner of Hanover and Myburgh roads. Police reviewed footage and noticed the suspects had tossed an object over a resident’s wall.”

A 9mm pistol, with seven rounds in the magazine was found.

“All three suspects were arrested and detained at Diep River police station. The firearm had all serial numbers filed off and has been sent to forensics for ballistic analysis,” says Chandler.
