Art removed for upgrade

2017-06-06 06:00

Artworks on the Sea Point promenade are set to be removed.

Various art pieces installed during the Art54 project will be removed before the final section of the promenade can be upgraded, ward councillor Dave Bryant said at a recent community meeting in Mouille Point.

The Sea Point promenade has undergone major repair works over the past five years, with the work currently taking place on the sea wall at Rocklands Bay and that section of the promenade (“The Pave way forward”, People’s Post, 21 February).

The rehabilitation of the sea wall and the promenade is being done in stages and is currently in the second phase, which will cost about R32m. The promenade next to Rocklands Bay will also get new paving to replace the current surface which has deteriorated over time.

The works along this section should be completed by April next year.

When the ward 54 public art project began over five years ago, the artworks were only ever meant to be temporary installations. Art pieces were installed in various public spaces in the area for a period of six to 12 months (“Art may stay for longer”, People’s Post, 3 November 2015).

JP Smith, Mayco member for safety, security, and social services confirmed the public art project has drawn to a close. “This pilot project provided valuable input into the City’s Public Art Standard Operating Procedures document.”
