Athlone A’s is the first team to taste victory against Westridge Yankees this season after beating the Mitchell’s Plain team 10-2 in a major league clash at the Vangate sports complex on Saturday.

The Yankees’ fate was sealed after they conceded five runs in the fourth inning and three runs in the sixth inning.

Faizel Moosa (3/5), Alister Veale (3/5), Darren Wedel (2/4) and Mathew Diedericks (2/5) hit well for the A’s.

The Yankees’ only hit was through Luwayne du Plessis in the fourth inning, off Athlone pitcher Dean Jacobs.

Jacobs pitched 5.1 innings, conceding the hit, two runs, striking out five and walking four. He was replaced by Carl Michaels who closed out the game, pitching 3.2 innings, striking out six hitters and conceding a walk.

Yankees used three pitchers: Du Plessis, Kyle Ripepi and Jared du Plessis. Between them they conceded 10 runs from 14 hits, as well as three walks while striking out only three Athlone hitters.
