Asleep at the track

2017-05-23 06:00

I am shocked and pretty angry after a bad experience at the Uxbridge Road railway crossing in Lakeside.

On Thursday 18 May at about 09:45 a number of cars, including myself, were crossing the railway line towards Zandvlei. The woman flag waver was sitting with her head down – she looked like she was asleep. Two cars crossed ahead of me (she did not look up) and as I crossed I looked right and then left. To my shock there was a train bearing down on me about 100m away. The train was not blowing its whistle.

I hooted to “wake” the flag lady and pointed to the oncoming train. There was a car on my tail so I quickly finished crossing to give him a chance to get off the line. The flag lady casually got up and started to wave her flag and stop the traffic. By that time the train was almost at the crossing.

When I returned half an hour later, I confronted her about it. She totally denied it and said: “Where’s the train, hey, where’s the train?”

She was very arrogant and told me I was lying and that I was supposed to look out for the trains, not her. I said that fortunately I did look, but she was being paid to do a job. She was totally unfazed and just continued being very arrogant.

I have often seen the train crossing guards fast asleep at their post – or not even to be seen anywhere. The situation has been like this for months.

When is Metrorail going to do something about the booms further up the line? Or are they waiting until there is a serious accident and then they will be forced to do something?
