LETTER: Authorities have biased gun rules

2015-11-24 06:00

The new law regarding legal firearms is unfair.

If a car licence application is late, then besides extra time allowed, it gets issued with a small fine. This applies to other late applications too. Apparently the new law states that it should be done 90 days before expiry. No-one told us this.

I have been a legal firearms owner since 1978 and was issued the last licence for five years in 2009. Unfortunately, the competency certificate date differed from the firearm’s and I was a few days late in my re-application. I had problems contacting the Parow office because they only work certain days and hours. When I finally saw them, the forms were issued and I returned it together with photos and the fee.

Now, almost 18 months later I still await the licence and was told not to even carry my firearm, let alone use it in self-defence.

Strangely enough, a local newspaper reported that only forthcoming late applications will now be harshly punished, as it was tolerated and accepted up until now. So what then about the thousands of people like myself?

Obviously somebody is misinformed. Latecomers could have their firearms cancelled, destroyed or re-applied for. Could this be the way to disarm legal holders?
