A seven-month-old baby died in a fire in Lotus River early this morning (12 December).

“The fire started at 04:00 on the corners of 4th Avenue and Ferndale Road in Lotus River. It is unknown how the fire started,” said Grassy Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith.

Reports indicate that the body of another person, possibly an adult was found, but the gender could not yet be confirmed.

Kleinsmith says that emergency services and police were still at the scene at the time publishing.

Cape Town Fire and rescue service spokesperson Liezl Moodie confirmed that four other adults were injured – two men and and two women, one of whom sustained second degree burns.

Moodie says the matter has been handed over to the police for investigation.

A total of 26 people were displaced after the fire.
