Beach frolic for all

2017-03-28 06:02

Entry to the beach at Muizenberg will be made easier for people facing difficulties at kerbs.

The City of Cape Town will be improving access at Muizenberg beach “due to the large number of people with disabilities who visit the beachfront to partake in surfing activities and the number of old-age homes in the area”, says Brett Herron, Mayco member for transport and urban development.

Universal access is about making facilities and services accessible to all residents, says Herron. “It provides people with disabilities the opportunity to access the beach. Universal access improvements such as dropped kerbs also improve access for parents pushing prams, parents with toddlers, and the aged.”

The measures at Muizenberg beach will include dropping kerbs to create ramps to give access to sidewalks, relocating obstacles that can be moved (like bins), and allocating parking spots to people with disabilities, Herron explains. “It will provide people with disabilities an opportunity to access the sidewalks and beachfront and to park closer to the public amenities,” he says.

In a recent subcouncil 19 meeting, a City official said that only Muizenberg and Strandfontein beaches currently have universal access features. However, Herron says universal access improvements have been undertaken at beaches citywide.
