Western Cape minister of cultural affairs and sport Anroux Marais was accompanied by members of the local community, Mitchell’s Plain ward councillors and a few of the Western Province rugby players on Tuesday last week when they got together to clean up Monwabisi Beach in Khayelitsha.

The beach clean-up was the closing event in her department’s programme as part of its water safety through aqua sport initiative. Marais and the rugby players also took the opportunity to engage with residents on water safety.

The participants, kitted out in gloves and with refuse bags in hand, braved the wind to clean the bathing area of the beach.

Many hands make lightMarais said: “The clean-up was the epitome of ‘better together’, because in no time, with the help of the WP rugby team, the community, City of Cape Town and Western Cape government officials, the constituency head, family and friends, we ensured a safer coastal area which the community can enjoy the summer days to come.”
