The Devil’s Peak and Vredehoek Neighbourhood Watch (DPV Watch) has created an award to thank its partners for outstanding service.

The Award for Outstanding Service and Dedication to the Community was awarded to Cape Town Central police’s Constable Sivuyile Mpangele at the watch’s recent annual meeting.

“Very often at our annual meetings we give awards of thanks to a number of people who have given a lot to the neighbourhood watch. This year we decided to not single out any members specifically as there have just been so many who have contributed to the work of DPV Watch and our successes,” says DPV Watch chairperson Vito Paparella.

“However, it was a unanimous decision that we wanted to acknowledge the excellent work that Mpangele does. It was felt that something different from the norm needed to be done, something that would stand out from all the other thanks and acknowledgements.”

It was decided that a floating DPV Watch award should be created, which comprises of a floating trophy, a certificate and a gift voucher, Paparella explains.

Mpangele is an officer of the visible policing section at Cape Town Central Police Station and regularly patrols in the neighbourhood watch’s area.

“He has been patrolling here since we started DPV Watch. We have a number of fantastic police officers who work in our area and we are extremely grateful for them. But Mpangele has at all times been a fantastic ambassador for the police. He clearly believes wholeheartedly in the value of the partnership between police and the community. When he works there are great arrests, he manages to be everywhere all the time, he answers our neighbourhood watch radio each and every time that we call him and he is so quick to keep us informed about what is happening that we should know about or help with,” Paparella says.

Everyone is eligible for the award in future years, Paparella adds.

“It is not an award reserved for police officers but rather any individual who has given a huge amount to this community.”
